Frequently Asked Questions
What does the surgery entail?
The surgery is usually done under local anaesthsia as a day case. Your natural lens will be removed and a miniture Galelian telescope,
the IOL-VIP, is inserted in the eye.
How does the IOL-VIP work?
The IOL-VIP works lilke a miniture telescope inside your eye. It magnify the image about 30%. The magnififed image is then shifted with a prism to a pre-operatively determined healthier part of the retina.
Do the lens implants need to be adjusted or changed at a later date?
No, The lenses are permanent and do not require any attention once fitted
Is anyone with AMD (macular degeneration) suitable for this procedure?
Implanting this lens system can only be done once your vision has been stable for a few months. Eyes with exceptionally poor vision may not benefit as much from the surgery.
What will my vision be like after surgery?
The outcome can usually be demonstrated to you prior to surgery with the aid of a simulator and specialised computer software. You then can make up your own mind as to whether the improvement of vision anticipated is worth it or not.
Will I still need magnifying glasses to read after the surgery?
This depends on your how poor your vision is prior to surgery. Generally you would need less magnification to read after surgery.
Is the surgery done to both eyes?
It can be. Usually, but not always, the best eye is done first and depending on the outcome and how happy you are with your vision the other eye can be operated on later.
Is this treatment available on the NHS?
Not at the present time.
Can I see the surgeon to discuss suitability for surgery and the expected outcome?
Yes, before your surgery a full assessment of your eyes will be done and the outcome will be simulated to you. All your questions will then be answered.
